Saskatchewan official getting a taste of the NFL - updated

Originally Tim Kroeker came into the CFL as a sideline official and after a couple appearances in Grey Cup games was moved to the referee position and you'll see #74 at umpire this season because that is the position he'll be in during an NFL pre-season game in August.  Kroeker, who has been in the CFL for 14 years, is now a member of the NFL's Official Development Program.

The NFL's Officiating Development Program, which is designed to train top officials in all aspects of NFL officiating.  Elements of the program include attending NFL minicamps and training camps, officiating preseason games, studying position-specific film with veteran NFL officials, reviewing mechanics and analyzing rules differences between the NFL and other leagues, including the CFL and college football.

Vancouver firefighter Dave Hawkshaw was one of the first CFL officials to be included in this program and he has since been hired as a full time on-field official in the NFL.

After meetings and camps in Arizona, New York and Dallas Kroeker was assigned to the pre-season game in Cleveland between the Browns and the Detroit Lions.

Into the Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Al Mitchell, a long time official from Saskatoon who is a member of the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame 2019 induction class.   After playing and coach, Mitchell turned his attention to officiating in 1990 and only retired after the 2018 season.  Mitchell has officiated all levels of amateur football up to university and was the referee in a Vanier Cup.  He  also includes an appearance in the Canadian Bowl and numerous elite level play-off games on his resume.

Along with on-field activities, Mitchell served several years as the USport supervisor in Saskatoon and sat on the Football Canada rules committee for four years.
